In 1951, Edgar and Nellie Lower purchased a local gas station with the help of Frank and Mary
Robinson to begin their business at the young age of 19. The station was converted into a repair
garage for automobiles, tractors or “just about anything” to be worked on. On January 1st, 1952, the
Bakersville Garage, Inc. opened for business. Along with his father, Clyde Lower, Edgar and a
handful of employees worked together to get the business off the ground and running. In 1954, Edgar
added Sperry New Holland products to the business, thus Bakersville Garage operation continued to
grow. In 1965, a new addition to the main building provided new area for the main sales room and
parts counter. Ten years later in 1975, a workshop was added to use as a paint shop and work area
for larger equipment. The last expansion was completed in the 1990s, with the addition of the
accounting and sales office. The farm equipment dealership has continued as a family business with
the day-to-day operations now handled by Edgar and Nellie’s three children, Cheryl Specht, Jerry
Lower and Kim Bennington, plus their son-in-law, Tim Specht. Currently, we are the only operating
farm equipment dealership in Coshocton County. Today, Bakersville Garage, Inc. celebrates 70+ years
in business.
From our humble start, Bakersville Garage, Inc. now features equipment from New Holland, Kinze, Bush
Hog, Great Plains, Hardi, Pequea, and other short lines. The dealership has a strong commitment to
and investment in providing parts and skilled technicians.
